For the past 20 years, the biggest cannabis festival in Europe has been held in the suburbs of Barcelona - Spannabis. In 2023, it was visited by more than 35,000 people, including members of the professional cannabis community and marijuana lovers from all over the world.
The three-day festival includes a whole series of large-scale events:
Highlights: 70s poster for the film “Cannabis” starring Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg.
Seeds, specialized growing equipment, the latest technological developments, natural fertilizers — a large part of the expo is dedicated to growing marijuana, because professional and aspiring growers make up almost 30% of the festival's visitors!
Manufacturers from Spain, the USA, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria, and other countries showcase their branded accessories: bongs, vaporizers, grinders, pipes, and all sorts of other cool smoking gadgets.
Industrial hemp has its own dedicated space at the expo, especially in the textile sphere. The fashion for eco-friendly, high-strength hemp fabrics is gaining popularity. Hemp materials are already used by brands such as H&M, Nike, Adidas, D&G, Burberry, Max Mara, and many, many more. The expo features both innovative fabrics and special equipment for weaving.
This section of the expo is growing at the fastest pace, just like scientific interest in CBD and medical cannabis all over the world!
Within the framework of the expo, the annual Spannabis Awards are held in the following categories:
The scientific and business conferences, which are among the most influential international events for the cannabis industry, bring together scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors from more than 40 countries.
The agenda of the three-day conferences includes the latest scientific research: medical and economic; issues of regulating the consumption and legalization of marijuana in Europe; trends in cannabis consumption and technological developments for its cultivation.
A jury of professional cannabis tasters (catadores) blindly evaluates the quality and presentation of cannabis products. "Blindly" means that the jury members assess the appearance, taste, smell, and other characteristics without knowing the name, manufacturer, or any other references to the nominee.
The main program of the championship includes the following nominations:
Cannabis clubs and growshops exhibit their products for the championship. By the way, anyone can try the best of the best at the championship (but be prepared to wait in line).
The festival has a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, even though some people are there to do serious business while others are just there to learn about cannabis culture for the first time. It's common to interact with strangers, share your thoughts and experiences. In the evenings, there's electronic music, beer, and wine.
There's a designated outdoor area where you can smoke marijuana throughout the festival. It's usually hard to leave without making some interesting new friends!
You must be over 18 years old and have an ID with you. You can only purchase personalized tickets: either for one day (22€) or for all three days of the festival (50€).
Spannabis is held annually in February-March at the Fira de Cornellá venue.
